What Asphalt Paving Costs in West Texas
An honest guide to what drives the price of a driveway, parking lot or road in Midland, Odessa and the Permian Basin, and why nobody can quote you accurately over the phone.
Most paving companies won't publish anything about pricing. We understand why. Every job is different and a number taken out of context becomes a stick to beat you with later. But refusing to explain how pricing works leaves people unable to compare quotes or judge whether one is reasonable.
So this page doesn't give you a price. It explains what moves the price, so that when three quotes land on your desk you can see why they differ and which one is actually comparing like for like.
What actually drives the number
Roughly in order of how much they move it.
1. The base, not the surface
The single largest variable. Ground that already has a sound, compacted base costs a fraction of ground that needs excavating, filling and building up from scratch. Two identical-looking driveways can differ enormously here, and it's invisible once the job is done, which is exactly why some quotes come in suspiciously low.
2. Square footage
Obvious, but not linear. Larger jobs get better efficiency per foot because mobilization is spread across more area. A very small job can cost more per square foot than a large one.
3. Asphalt depth
A residential driveway and a lot taking loaded trucks need different sections. Paying for depth you don't need is waste; skipping depth you do need means rutting within a couple of seasons.
4. Drainage
If water has nowhere to go, it has to be given somewhere, grading, fall, sometimes a swale. Sites that already drain cost less than sites that pond.
5. Access and haul distance
How far material travels and whether equipment can get in easily. Remote rural sites carry real haul cost; tight urban sites carry real handling cost.
6. Material choice
Hot-mix asphalt, recycled millings, chip seal and caliche span a wide cost range. On long driveways and rural roads this choice often matters more than everything above it.
7. Repair vs replace
An overlay over a sound base costs well under a full rebuild. Crack filling costs a fraction of either.
How to compare three quotes properly
Quotes that differ by a lot usually aren't quoting the same job. Before assuming the cheapest is the best value, check that all three specify the same things:
Base depth and material. If one quote says four inches of caliche and another doesn't mention base at all, you're not comparing anything. The one that stays quiet is where the money was saved.
Asphalt thickness. Should be stated in inches, compacted. "New asphalt driveway" without a depth is not a specification.
What happens to drainage. If your site ponds now and a quote doesn't address it, the new surface will pond too.
Whether it's itemized. A single lump sum tells you nothing about what you can adjust. An itemized quote lets you decide what to include.
What isn't included. Removal and haul-off of the old surface, striping, and any repair work discovered once the surface comes up.
Cheaper ways to get what you need
Don't pave what doesn't need it
The drive near the house in hot-mix, the long run out to the road in chip seal, the back yard in caliche. Most properties don't need one material everywhere, and quoting it that way costs a lot more.
Repair before it compounds
Crack filling is cents per foot. The pothole it prevents is not. The rebuild that pothole eventually becomes is a different order of number again.
Combine the mobilization
Doing the driveway and the shop yard in one visit costs less than two separate trips. If you have work coming, it's worth doing together.
Paving cost FAQs
Why won't you give me a price over the phone?
Because the base is the biggest cost variable and it can't be assessed without seeing the ground. A number given blind is either padded to cover the worst case or too low to be honoured. We look, measure, and put an itemized number in writing. There's no charge for that.
Is asphalt cheaper than other paving materials?
For most driveways and lots, yes, and it's faster to install and easier to repair. Chip seal and caliche cost less again over distance, which is why they're often the better answer for long rural drives and roads.
How much does resurfacing cost versus replacing?
Resurfacing costs well under a full replacement because it reuses the existing base instead of tearing it out. It only works where the base is sound, over a failed base an overlay buys months.
Does a bigger job cost less per square foot?
Usually yes. Mobilization, equipment and setup spread across more area, so the per-foot rate improves with size. Very small jobs carry a higher per-foot cost.
What should I be suspicious of in a paving quote?
No base specification, no asphalt depth in inches, no mention of drainage on a site that ponds, and a single lump sum with no itemization. Also anyone who quotes without visiting. A number produced without seeing the ground is a guess.
