Caliche is the material West Texas is built on. It sits naturally under much of the Permian Basin. A hard, calcium-rich layer that compacts into an exceptionally stable base, and it's why roads out here get built differently than they do in wetter parts of the country.

West Tex Paving has worked caliche since 1975, both as the base under asphalt and chip seal and as a finished driving surface in its own right. Most of what we build starts with it, whether or not anything goes on top.

Why caliche works out here

Caliche binds. Unlike loose gravel, which stays loose and shifts under traffic, caliche has natural cementing properties, compacted at the right moisture content it sets up into a dense, hard layer that carries weight and sheds water rather than absorbing it. That's why it's the default base across the Basin and why a properly built caliche road can carry loaded trucks for years.

The catch is that it has to be built right. Caliche placed too dry never binds. Placed too wet it won't compact. Spread too thick in one lift and the bottom stays loose while the top looks finished. Most failed caliche roads out here failed for one of those three reasons, not because caliche was the wrong choice.

We build in lifts at the right moisture, compact each one, and grade for drainage as we go. It's less exciting than the paving that comes after, and it decides everything.

Choosing material

Caliche, gravel or millings?

They behave differently. The right one depends on the traffic and the site.

Caliche

Binds and sets hard, carries the most weight, sheds water. The default for roads, bases and pads. Dusty in dry spells and it wants regrading periodically, but nothing else matches it for load-carrying at the price.

Gravel

Drains freely and stays workable, but doesn't bind. It migrates under traffic and needs a containing edge or it spreads. Good for yards, parking areas and drives where drainage matters more than a hard-set surface.

Recycled millings

Reclaimed asphalt that knits back together in the heat, giving a firmer, less dusty surface than gravel for less than new hot-mix. A strong middle option for long driveways and overflow parking.

Keeping an aggregate road working

Every unsealed surface is a maintenance surface. Traffic pushes material to the edges, wheels cut washboard into the straights, and water finds the low spots. None of that means the road has failed. It means it's due for a grade.

Regrading reshapes the crown, pulls material back from the shoulders into the running surface, and cuts out the washboard. Done on an interval it's inexpensive and keeps a road serviceable more or less indefinitely. Left too long, ruts hold water, water softens the base, and what was a grading job becomes a rebuild.

If dust is the problem rather than the shape, chip sealing over a sound caliche base is usually the answer. It locks the surface down, kills the dust, and costs far less than paving.

What is caliche and why is it used for roads in West Texas?

Caliche is a naturally occurring, calcium-rich material found through much of the Permian Basin. Its value is that it binds, compacted at the right moisture it sets into a dense, hard layer that carries weight and sheds water. That makes it both the standard base under asphalt and a durable driving surface on its own.

How much does a caliche road cost?

It depends on width, the depth of material the traffic calls for, how much grading and drainage the route needs, and haul distance from the pit. That last one moves the number more than most people expect. There's no useful per-mile figure without seeing the ground. We walk the route and give a free itemized written estimate.

What is the difference between caliche and gravel?

Caliche binds and sets hard; gravel stays loose and drains. Caliche carries more weight and holds its shape better, which is why it's used for roads and bases. Gravel migrates under traffic and wants an edge to contain it, but drains freely, better where water management matters more than a hard surface.

Can you put asphalt over an existing caliche road?

Often yes, and it's the cheapest good road you can buy. If the caliche is well compacted and draining it makes an excellent base. We prepare it and pave or chip seal straight over. If it's soft, rutted or holding water, that has to be corrected first, or the new surface cracks over the low spots.

How often does a caliche road need regrading?

It depends on traffic and weather. A heavily used lease road wants attention far more often than a ranch drive. The signals are washboard on the straights, material pushed to the shoulders, and water standing after rain. Grading on an interval is cheap; waiting until ruts hold water turns it into a rebuild.

Why did my caliche road fail?

Usually one of three things: placed too dry to bind, too wet to compact, or spread too thick in a single lift so the bottom never compacted. Drainage is the fourth. A road with no fall holds water and softens from underneath regardless of how well the material was placed.

Do you haul the material as well as place it?

Yes. Material supply, haul, placement, grading and compaction as one job, along with the excavation and dirt work underneath. One crew rather than coordinating a hauler, an operator and a contractor separately.
